Reality Television Reality

Earlier this week in class, we discussed the level of reality on shows like the "Real World" and "Survivor" among others. We talked about whether or not these types of shows displayed any type of reality at all. In my opinion, those shows do display some reality, but most of it, I think, is done just to get higher ratings.

Obviously, showing people arguing, having sex, crying, and fighting will obtain higher ratings that will lead to the success of the show. However, on the other hand, I do think some reality television shows showcase real-life issues that the viewers can definitely relate to.

For example, on every season of the "Real World", they're always seems to be a young male or female who has problems with their self-confidence. There's always someone who acts like a slut because they never felt loved throughout their childhood, or a drunk who always drinks because of their depression. Its funny to me how there's always someone who does crazy things on the show because of their numerous issues that need resolving. But the good thing is, throughout the season, the roommates always seem to help them with their problems, and they usually leave better off then they came.

Basically, reality television does seem very unrealistic at times, but in a lot of situations, the episodes can be very "real" to a lot of people. In my opinion, reality television and sports is the best thing on television right now, and nothing needs to be changed about it!!
